Following Manchester City’s stellar opening weekend, the Cityzens headed back to the Etihad for their home season opener against AFC Bournemouth.
The game started strong for City as they were on the attacking foot from the second the ref blew the whistle. The first 20 minutes of the game were filled with nothing but fluid motion and passes through Kevin De Bruyne and Ilkay Gundogan - a highly successful system throughout their match versus West Ham. Once again, the adaptability of both Walker and Cancelo opened much-needed channels for the creative midfielders, which was seen in the team’s first goal. Walker’s ability to come central and attract defenders gives Gundo the time and space to play a quick one-two with Haaland to secure the easy finish.
What’s great about Manchester City is not only the ability to find the perfect play after minutes of possession, but they are also great at exposing teams who commit too many numbers forward. This was evident in the match's second goal as a quick clearance up the field led to two quick passes and a solo Kevin De Bruyne masterpiece. Foden’s pass put De Bruyne in acres of space and in a 1v1 situation, Kevin was able to capitalize with a beautiful outside of the boot finish.
Again, for the third goal, Bournemouth committed numbers forward and City capitalized. A big switch from Mahrez to De Bruyne left him one-on-one to the defender. A slick throughball from De Bruyne to Foden led to a deflected finish, for City to go up 3-0. As the second half proceeded, City continued to attack but the intensity of the match definitely settled. In the 78th minute, Joao Cancelo’s effort on the left-flank led to a cross which deflected off Jefferson Lerma and went into the goal for City’s fourth of the night.
City had a great performance versus Bournemouth and will be looking to continue this form on Sunday as they take on Newcastle at St. James’ Park.
